A typical three-pin laser diode has an anode (+), a cathode (–), and a monitor photodiode pin for output feedback.Pin FunctionsAnode (LD +): This is the positive pin of the laser diode where the driving current enters. It supplies the electrical energy required for the diode to emit light .Cathode (LD –): This is the negative pin, completing the electrical circuit. The current flows from the anode through the laser diode to the cathode .Monitor Photodiode (Case or PD pin): This pin is connected to an internal photodiode that monitors the laser's output power. The photodiode generates a small current proportional to the emitted light, which can be fed back to a driver circuit to maintain stable laser output . In some packages, this pin may also be connected to the laser diode case for grounding or thermal purposes .Additional NotesThe pin numbering is often standardized clockwise when viewed from the top of the package (the side where the laser beam exits), with pin 1 as the anode, pin 2 as the case or photodiode, and pin 3 as the cathode .Laser diodes are sensitive to overcurrent and electrostatic discharge (ESD), so a proper constant-current driver and ESD precautions are essential .Some laser diodes may have slightly different pin arrangements depending on the manufacturer, so consulting the datasheet is recommended for precise identification .
