What causes white spots on the cross-section of a fiber optic cable patch cord

White spots on the cross-section of a fiber optic patch cord are usually caused by contamination, debris, or residue on the fiber endface that blocks or scatters light.Common Causes1. Dust and Particulate Contamination Even microscopic dust particles can appear as white spots under inspection. These particles can settle on the fiber endface from the surrounding environment, especially in dusty or static-prone areas. A single particle can partially or completely block the fiber core, causing signal loss or back reflections . 2. Fingerprints and Oils Handling the fiber without proper precautions can leave oils or residues from skin contact. These contaminants often appear as white or cloudy spots on the fiber endface and can interfere with light transmission . 3. Residue from Protective Caps Dust caps or endface covers, while intended to protect the fiber, can themselves leave residues. Plastic caps may emit mold-release agents or degrade over time, leaving a film that appears as white spots when the cap is removed . 4. Scratches or Micro-Damage Improper cleaning or mating of connectors can cause scratches or micro-abrasions on the fiber surface. These defects can scatter light and sometimes appear as white spots under a microscope . 5. Contamination Transfer Connecting a contaminated fiber to a clean port can transfer debris, creating visible spots on previously clean fibers. This is common in patch cords that are frequently connected and disconnected .Prevention and MitigationAlways inspect fiber endfaces with a microscope before connecting.Use lint-free wipes and approved solvents like isopropyl alcohol for cleaning .Keep protective caps on until the fiber is ready to be connected.Avoid touching the endface and handle fibers in clean environments.Re-inspect after cleaning to ensure all contaminants are removed. Proper inspection and cleaning are critical because even tiny white spots can degrade network performance, increase error rates, or damage expensive optical equipment .
